Our client was charged a staggering $107,000 by their family lawyer. Our client was particularly distressed as the bill was only for a few months of work, and the original total legal costs estimate by the solicitor was significantly lower.
We immediately wanted to help and initiated proceedings in the NSW Supreme Court. We presented detailed objections to various aspects of the lawyer's bill, including the unreasonableness of time spent by the solicitor in carrying out the work. Ultimately, the Costs Assessor ruled that the bill should be reduced by $20,357.80, and ordered the lawyer repay our client for all the fees that they had paid to us to represent them. Because our client had already paid a large portion of the fees charged by the lawyer, they were ultimately entitled to a refund.
