Our client based in Victoria engaged us in May 2023 to assessed costs charged by his former lawyer in his oppression claim. He was charged $177,252.52 in legal fees and had paid $120,857.90. His former lawyer had filed a debt recovery proceeding to recover the outstanding costs. Upon review of the former lawyers costs agreement, we noticed no breach to its disclosure obligations. After lengthy negotiations, both parties agreed that the total legal costs would be $140,000, leading to a 21% reduction in his legal fees.
All of this occurred within 5 months of engagement.
